In order to keep your braces in top-notch condition, you need to avoid certain foods. Those foods are hard and sticky foods as well as foods high in sugar. It’s important to avoid these products because hard foods can break and damage your appliance, and sticky foods can get caught between your wires and brackets. It’s also best to avoid eating foods that are high in sugar because they can promote tooth decay and other related problems.

Some examples of sticky foods to avoid include:

  • Gum (sugar-free or regular gum)
  • Licorice
  • Sugar Daddies
  • Toffee
  • Tootsie Rolls
  • Caramel
  • Starburst

Some examples of hard foods to avoid include:

  • Ice
  • Nuts
  • Hard taco shells
  • French bread crust/rolls
  • Corn on the cob
  • Apples and carrots (unless they are cut into small pieces)
  • Bagels
  • Chips
  • Jolly Ranchers
  • Pizza crust
  • Uncooked carrots (unless cut)

It’s best to minimize sugary foods like:

  • Cake
  • Ice cream
  • Cookies
  • Pie
  • Candy

Typically, it’s recommended to drink the following products only once a day:

  • Soda
  • Sweetened tea
  • Gatorade
  • Kool-Aid
  • Drinks with sugar

We also encourage you to quit bad habits like biting your nails, chewing on pens and pencils, and chewing on foreign objects. These activities can damage your appliance.
