Elastics

Elastics, nylon or latex bands, aid in reaching the best orthodontic results possible by aiding the tooth movement achieved through braces and wires. Elastics provide planned directional forces to encourage the teeth to move in the ideal direction or manner.

Retainers

After your straightening treatment is complete, whether through braces or Invisalign®, your teeth will need to be stabilized to avoid shifting. Retainers are used to accomplish this. These appliances hold the teeth in their ideal positions until the bones and gums can stabilize and are an essential part of your treatment.

Retainers are usually worn full time for about three months after active orthodontic treatment. After that, patients wear retainers nightly and when at home for an additional nine months. Following the first year of treatment, retainers will be worn indefinitely during sleep hours.

Lower retainers are often bonded to the six front teeth and are not visible to others. Upper retainers are most often Essix Appliances — clear plastic shells that are worn over the teeth.

Separators

Separators are made of elastic, stainless steel, or brass. They help create space between the back teeth in preparation for the placement or fitting of orthodontic bands.

Essix Appliance (Retainer)

The Essix Appliance is used to ether maintain the results of a previous orthodontic result or prevent undesirable teeth movement. Lower retainers are often bonded to the six front teeth and are not visible to others. Upper retainers are most often Essix Appliances — clear plastic shells that are worn over the teeth.

Facemask (Extra-Oral Protraction Headgear Device)

The Facemask Appliance one-piece unit is made up of a stainless steel framework (central core) with adjustable chin and forehead pads. There is also a cross piece that attaches directly to an intra-oral (inside the mouth) appliance to bring the upper jaw forward and downward.

Mandibular Hawley Appliance (Lower Removable Retainer)

The Mandibular Hawley Appliance is used to either maintain the results of a previous orthodontic result or prevent undesirable teeth movement.

Retainers are usually worn full time for about three months after active orthodontic treatment. After that, patients wear retainers nightly and when at home for an additional nine months. Following the first year of treatment, retainers will be worn indefinitely during sleep hours.

A Mandibular Hawley Appliance usually consists of stainless steel clips on the back teeth, a wire across the front teeth, and a polished acrylic framework along the inside of the mouth, all reinforced with stainless steel wires.

Maxillary Hawley Appliance (Upper Removable Retainer)

The Maxillary Hawley Appliance is used to either maintain the results of a previous orthodontic result or prevent undesirable teeth movement.

Retainers are usually worn full time for about three months after active orthodontic treatment. After that, patients wear retainers nightly and when at home for an additional nine months. Following the first year of treatment, retainers will be worn indefinitely during sleep hours.

A Maxillary Hawley Appliance usually consists of stainless steel clips on the back teeth, a wire across the front teeth, and a polished acrylic framework along the inside of the roof of the mouth, all reinforced with stainless steel wires.
