At Hawaii Smile Designs, we strive to provide expert orthodontic care to patients of all ages throughout the Kihei, Lahaina, and Lihue, HI areas. We provide a wide range of orthodontic treatments and services, and Dr. Miyai works with each patient individually to design a comprehensive, personalized orthodontic treatment plan. While we treat a wide range of orthodontic issues and problems, the vast majority of patients have one or multiple of the following common orthodontic problems.

If left untreated, these conditions can cause problems with the look and function of your bite and smile. Through orthodontic treatment, we can correct these problems, providing you with a beautiful, functional smile for the rest of your life.

Underbite

Underbite occurs when the lower jaw extends out past the upper jaw, causing the upper front teeth to sit inside the lower front teeth. This condition can impair the function and appearance of the smile.

Overbite

Overbite is characterized by the upper front teeth extending out too far past the lower front teeth. In extreme cases, overbite may even cause the lower front teeth to bite into the roof of the mouth. Overbite can impair the function of the bite, cause a "gummy smile," cause the lips to protrude, or create excessive wear on the incisors.

Crossbite

If a patient has a crossbite, the lower teeth sit outside the upper teeth. Crossbite can cause tooth stratification, facial asymmetry, and improper jaw growth, which may also lead to other issues like temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD).

Upper Front Teeth Protrusion

In this malocclusion, the upper teeth extend too far forward and the lower teeth don't extend far enough forward. In addition to impairing the function and appearance of the bite, protruding upper front teeth are at a higher risk for trauma and breakage.

Crowding

This malocclusion occurs when the gum line doesn't have enough space for teeth to erupt properly. In addition to causing aesthetic problems, crowded teeth are more difficult to clean, increasing the risk for dental decay and cavities.

Spacing

If a patient has spacing issues, there may be large gaps between the teeth. This is generally due to the teeth being too small for the gums, but may also be a result of missing teeth. Spacing also increases the risk of food impaction which increases the risk of dental cavities and periodontal disease if home oral hygiene is not great.

Openbite

Openbite occurs when the upper and lower front teeth don't overlap, leaving an open space in the smile when the mouth is closed. Openbite can impact chewing, speaking, and the look of the smile, and is often caused by early habits like tongue thrusting or thumb sucking. Openbite is best treated by early orthodontic treatment.

Mismatched Dental Midlines

Improperly matched dental midlines occur when the back bite fails to fit and match correctly, which can impair jaw growth and bite function and may cause TMD.
